The building complex, located directly on the city wall and the Steinhagentor gate, is part of Hattingen's old town with its 143 listed historic half-timbered houses.
The original building, dating from around 1650, formerly located on a street in the working-class district of St. Georg, now borders the newly created Steinhagenplatz square and, thanks to centuries of additions and extensions, stretches along the city wall and far into Grabenstraße.
Where there used to be a butcher's shop, a lottery shop and a hairdressing salon, the building now houses guest apartments.
The recent conversion has also preserved private living areas, but in a completely different location in the house. During the restoration, previous construction errors were rectified, but traces of the past were deliberately preserved and can still be found throughout the house.
We have recently expanded our range and now offer four
additional apartments that are not located at Steinhagen:
- Apartment Gelb und Wald, located on Kirchplatz.
- Apartment Heroes, located on Bredenscheidenstraße, 100 metres from our building.
- Apartment Atelier, located in Bochum Weitmar.
The house at the city gate is located in a quiet pedestrian zone in a lively district of Hattingen, which is also popular with tourists thanks to its numerous shops, restaurants, cafés and city marketing events.
The Ruhr and the local recreation area “Elfringhäuser Schweiz” are just a short distance away.
A charming town for hiking and relaxing
With its three castles, medieval town centre and picturesque surroundings, Hattingen is one of the most beautiful towns in the Ruhr region. The well-preserved church square with St. George's Church and the 143 surrounding monuments is well worth a visit. Lovingly restored half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages form the charming backdrop to a town full of character, where life is good and visitors are warmly welcomed.
